Beech Forest with Anemones, Peder Mønsted — Postcard

A carpet of white wood anemones spreads beneath two heavy beech trunks, their bark mottled with moss and burl. This is early spring rather than deep summer green — the canopy still thin enough to let strong light through to the forest floor. A narrow stream is just visible through the trees in the background, a recurring device Mønsted used to give his forest interiors depth without breaking their enclosed feeling. The gnarled root structures at the base of the trunks receive the same careful attention as the flowers, evidence of the close, almost naturalist observation running through his forest paintings. Danish beechwoods in spring were among his most repeated subjects, and this is a particularly detailed example. Well suited to a art postcard collection built around forest or spring themes.
