Alpine Winter Forest, Peder Mønsted — Art Postcard

Mønsted spent long stretches in the Alps and Bavaria, and this painting belongs to that body of work: snow-laden spruce catching the light in the foreground, a bare sapling threading through the branches, and a sunlit peak rising clear against the winter sky beyond. The contrast he builds between cold blue shadow on the snow and the brilliant white where the sun lands is the real subject here, more than any single tree or ridge.
