Palace Grand Hall — Stanislav Zhukovsky Postcard

A palatial hall opens through tall doors into a quiet enfilade of further rooms — marble pilasters in soft pink, classical reliefs of dancing figures, a heavy crystal chandelier overhead, and gilded urns standing watch on either side. Zhukovsky often painted such interiors in Russia's great palaces and museums in the early 1900s, looking for that hush of historic rooms when no one is in them.
