Most of Zhukovsky's landscapes are about something tame — an estate path, a garden chair. This one isn't. Here he steps back and gives you the whole shore: a slate-blue lake under a sky that is doing real work, a handful of cut stumps in the foreground, and the dark line of the forest holding the far bank together.
