Stanislav Zhukovsky Dense Autumn Forest Postcard

A wall of October colour pressed up against the picture plane — no path, no horizon, only the breathing crown of a mixed forest in late autumn. Stanislav Zhukovsky (1875–1944) returned year after year to this patient observation of birch, aspen and fir. Here the conifers anchor the composition while the yellow and rust foliage seems to drift forward, almost into the viewer's hands. The card carries a small sample of late-Imperial landscape painting into another country's mailbox.
