Blue Drawing Room — Stanislav Zhukovsky Postcard

Stanislav Zhukovsky painted Russian aristocratic interiors as carefully as any landscape, and this blue-and-gilt salon is one of his most theatrical. Two white marble statues stand in niches flanking the open doorway; through it, a red anteroom leads on to a sunlit garden. The painter catches the cool blue panelling, the gold of the mirrors, the worn lustre of parquet — the kind of room that would barely survive the next decade.
