Stanislav Zhukovsky Autumn Terrace Chrysanthemums Postcard

The white-painted garden chairs are pushed back from the table; a jug of chrysanthemums stands in the cooling air. Fallen birch leaves have already drifted across the boards. Beyond the low wooden railing, a row of birches has turned the colour of weak tea and afternoon sun. Stanislav Zhukovsky (1875–1944) returned often to this in-between season, when the dacha is being slowly given back to the garden. He paints melancholy without sentiment — the chairs still set out, the flowers still tended, the light still arriving each morning.
