Witte duiven in venster (White Doves in a Window) by Dutch artist Theo van Hoytema (1863–1917) depicts two white doves sitting closely together on a wooden windowsill. The birds are framed by a small architectural window opening, surrounded by muted green, brown and ochre tones that give the image a quiet, intimate character.
Hoytema was particularly admired for his stylised depictions of animals and birds. Rather than pursuing strict naturalistic detail, he combined careful observation with decorative line, simplified forms and harmonious colour. This approach places the image within the distinctive tradition of Dutch decorative graphic art at the turn of the twentieth century, with affinities to the ornamental language of Art Nouveau.
The Rijksmuseum identifies this sheet as a colour lithograph on Chine collé and a proof print for the March 1910 calendar sheet. Hoytema created numerous illustrations, book designs, lithographs and calendar images featuring birds, animals and plants, helping establish him as one of the notable Dutch graphic artists of his generation.
Reproduced as a fine-art postcard, Witte duiven in venster brings the quiet charm of early twentieth-century Dutch animal art and decorative printmaking into the intimate format of traditional correspondence. It is a lovely choice for lovers of birds, doves, Dutch graphic art, Art Nouveau, vintage illustration, animal art and fine-art postcards for postcrossing and snail mail.
