Vegetable Gardens in Montmartre — Vincent van Gogh, 1887

During his two years in Paris (1886–88), Van Gogh worked outdoors among the vegetable allotments on the slopes of Montmartre, drawn to the ordinary life of the Butte. This 1887 plein-air study captures the terraced plots with the silhouette of a windmill rising above — a quiet corner of the city his better-known peers rarely chose to paint.
