In June 1888 Van Gogh made a brief trip south from Arles to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer on the Mediterranean coast. He worked intensively, producing drawings and paintings of the village and its famous pilgrimage church. This view captures the white-washed fishermen's houses clustered under a vivid blue southern sky — a vivid contrast to his usual Arles motifs.
