Portrait of Père Tanguy — Vincent van Gogh, 1887–88

Julien "Père" Tanguy sold paint to half of Paris and took canvases in trade from artists nobody else would touch. Van Gogh's portrait of 1887–88 sits him among the Japanese woodblock prints Tanguy also stocked — the backdrop becomes a quiet argument for the modern painting both men believed in.
