The Harvest at La Crau with Montmajour — Vincent van Gogh, 1888

One of Van Gogh's most ambitious Arles canvases — a wide panorama of the La Crau plain at harvest time in summer 1888. The scale is almost topographical: haystacks, reapers, a cart, the distant silhouette of Montmajour abbey. Van Gogh wrote about this painting with particular satisfaction; it is the plain at its most legible, the south as a working landscape rather than a colour sensation.
