Green Wheat Field with Cypress — Vincent van Gogh, Saint-Rémy 1889

At Saint-Rémy in 1889 Van Gogh returned again and again to the view from the asylum walls — the wheat fields below, the Alpilles beyond, the cypress as vertical statement. This canvas brings a single tall cypress into the centre of a green wheat field: earth, flame-shape and sky held in balance. The original is in the Národní galerie in Prague.
