Daubigny's Garden — Vincent van Gogh, Auvers 1890

Charles-François Daubigny had died twelve years before Van Gogh arrived in Auvers, but he lived in the town and the garden was still tended. Van Gogh painted it in July 1890 — one of the last canvases of his life — as a tribute to a Barbizon painter he had admired since his Dutch years. The result is the south brought north: bold colours, a layered garden, a summer caught at its fullest. A postcard from the final weeks of one of painting's most driven lives.
