Café Terrace at Night — Vincent van Gogh, 1888

One of Van Gogh's first true Arles night scenes, this 1888 view of the Place du Forum reaches its glow without a single drop of black — the gaslit terrace set against a star-filled cobalt sky. Van Gogh wrote of wanting to paint night without using black; this is the result. The canvas is at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.
