Basket with Daisies — Vincent van Gogh, 1887

Painted in 1887 during the Paris years, Basket with Daisies belongs to the small flower studies Van Gogh used to test what saturated colour could do at close range. The picture is patient and unhurried, the kind of work in which he was teaching himself the alphabet of what was about to become Arles. These Paris still lives formed a quiet laboratory — the controlled distance before the open-sky intoxication of Provence.
