Renoir — Madame Charpentier and Her Children (1878) — Postcard

Commissioned by the publisher Georges Charpentier and exhibited at the 1879 Salon, this large group portrait helped turn Renoir's career toward wider public success. Madame Charpentier sits in black on a sofa with her two daughters in matching pale blue dresses, the family dog at their feet and a Japanese folding screen at her shoulder — a careful, modern bourgeois interior.
