Lise Sewing — Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1866 | Postcard by Zolota Ptakha

A dark-haired young woman in a striped blouse, a red ribbon in her hair, leans over her sewing in concentrated profile. Painted in 1866, this is early Renoir — still close to the realist tradition of Courbet, the impressionist sunshine of the next decade not yet in view. Lise was the painter's frequent model during these years; here she is simply at work.

The card is for friends who keep mending baskets, hand-finish their own clothes, or like Renoir before he became "Renoir".
