A young woman rests her chin lightly on her hand, gaze drifting somewhere just past the viewer, blonde hair loose against a haze of warm rose and gold. Painted around 1876–77 and held at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts in Birmingham, "La Pensée" is one of Renoir's quietest portraits of daydreaming — a card for the friend who keeps a journal and stares out of trains.
