A young sitter tilts her head to steady a wide straw hat, one hand raised to her cheek, the brim trimmed with red poppies, white daisies and a dark blue ribbon. Painted in 1880, the portrait sets warm flesh tones against a near-black background, with the cool ribbon the only sharp note of colour.
