Renoir — Flowers and Prickly Pears (c. 1885–86) — Postcard

Held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Algiers, Flowers and Prickly Pears (c. 1885–86) is one of Renoir's more unusual still lifes: chrysanthemums and other blossoms set beside the spiny fruit of an opuntia in a ribbed white vase. The combination feels closer to a Mediterranean garden than a Parisian flower seller's bouquet, and the contrast of petal and prickly pear keeps the picture awake.
