Three Mendès sisters gather around an upright piano: one seated at the keys with the score open, another standing behind with a violin and bow, the youngest leaning in to listen while a small vase of orange flowers waits on top. Renoir painted them in 1888 for the symbolist poet Catulle Mendès; the canvas is now at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York — a card for music teachers, sisters and anyone who remembers Sunday practice.
