Poppy Fields near Argenteuil — Monet Postcard

Two tall poplars frame the left edge; the rest of the canvas opens onto a low field of red poppies, a small bonneted figure walking among them, and a distant village resting on the horizon under a wide cloud sky. Argenteuil was Monet's home in the early 1870s — the riverside village just outside Paris where impressionism crystallised — and these summer fields belong to that fertile chapter of his work.
