Plate 07; Swallowtail Butterfly by Joris Hoefnagel - Postcard

Plate 7: Swallowtail Butterfly, c. 1575/1590s, by Flemish artist Joris Hoefnagel presents a meticulously observed swallowtail butterfly within a delicate golden oval frame. The butterfly's black-and-yellow wings are accented by vivid blue and orange markings, while its finely drawn body and antennae reveal Hoefnagel's extraordinary attention to natural detail.

The butterfly is identified as Papilio machaon, the Old World swallowtail, and belongs to Hoefnagel's celebrated series Animalia Rationalia et Insecta (Ignis). Hoefnagel (1542–1600) was a Flemish Renaissance artist whose detailed studies of animals, insects and plants occupy an important place in the history of European natural-history illustration.

The original is recorded by the National Gallery of Art as watercolor and gold paint on parchment, with a page size of approximately 14.3 × 18.4 cm. This fine art postcard transforms a remarkable 16th-century natural-history study into a piece of contemporary correspondence, making it especially appealing for postcrossing, snail mail, postcard collecting and lovers of butterflies, natural history and Renaissance art.
