Two Women with Baskets by the River Wall — Leighton Postcard

Two women in summer Victorian dress sit on a bench beside a low red brick wall at the edge of an English waterway. One holds a wicker basket and watches the water; the other turns slightly toward something beyond the frame. Below them a young man rows by, hat and all, oars dipping into a slow, gleaming current. The willow leans in from the upper left, and the meadow on the far bank is the colour of late June.

It is a piece by Edmund Blair Leighton (1853–1922), the British painter who specialised in these small, observant moments of late-Victorian life.
