Garden at Sainte-Adresse, painted in the summer of 1867 and now at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, is one of Monet's boldest early pictures. Two flags rise above a seaside terrace at Le Havre's coastal suburb; a couple stand at the railing, two relatives sit beneath parasols and flowers, and beyond them the Channel stretches in flat light dotted with sailboats and steamers.

Monet himself nicknamed it ‘the Chinese painting’ for its flatness and high horizon, borrowed from the Japanese prints he was collecting — a detail worth mentioning to anyone who collects marine or garden views.
