Figure of a Woman — Study to the Painting “Strange Garden” was created in 1902 by Polish artist Józef Mehoffer (1869–1946) as a preparatory study for his celebrated painting Strange Garden. The work presents a woman in a vivid blue dress and wide-brimmed hat, standing against a richly coloured garden landscape.
Strange Garden, created in 1902–1903, is one of Mehoffer's best-known works and an important example of the Polish modernist movement known as Młoda Polska (Young Poland). The preparatory figure study preserves the striking visual language of that period, where symbolism, decorative colour and close observation of nature could coexist within a single composition.
Today the study belongs to the collection of the National Museum in Kraków. Reproduced as a fine-art postcard, Figure of a Woman is an evocative piece of Polish art history for lovers of Józef Mehoffer, Young Poland, Symbolism, Art Nouveau aesthetics, women in art, garden paintings and richly coloured early twentieth-century European art.
