Étretat's chalk cliffs rise straight out of the Channel on Normandy's Alabaster Coast, carved by the sea into an arch — the Manneporte — and a free-standing spire called the Aiguille. Monet painted this coastline repeatedly through the mid-1880s, working fast in the open air to catch the light on wet rock before it changed. Here the water stays a cool, close-toned blue, with a scatter of small sailboats far out from shore.
