Cliff Walk at Pourville was painted in 1882 during a summer Monet spent in the Normandy fishing village of Pourville; the canvas is now at the Art Institute of Chicago. Two women in light dresses stand on the edge of a grass cliff, one holding a pink parasol, looking out over a sea scattered with pale sails. The wind runs through the grass in long, broken strokes of green, rose and yellow, echoed by the high clouds above.
It's one of Monet's clearest studies of coastal wind and light — a good match for anyone drawn to the outdoors more than to the boats themselves.
