Carl Larsson ‘Svea’, 1917 Art Postcard — Sweden

Dated 1917 and signed with Larsson's CL monogram, this late watercolour is quietly precise. A woman in a yellow cloche hat and grey knit sweater sits slightly turned, looking directly at the viewer. Behind her on the mantelpiece: a black teapot, a terracotta jug of yellow daffodils and pink flowers, a white ornamental piece. A gilt Rococo chair holds a dark blue hat; a walking stick or umbrella leans beside it.

Larsson painted this in his mid-sixties, two years before his death in 1919. His touch remained consistent: close attention to how objects occupy a room, the quality of light from a Swedish interior in early spring, and his steady ease with the domestic as subject. The painting is among his final works.
