Carl Larsson: Brita and the Lily — Postcard

In the drawing room at Lilla Hyttnäs, Carl Larsson's daughter Brita stands in a white summer dress and a wide-brimmed yellow straw hat. Beside her on the white Art Nouveau side table, a single orange lily rises from a slender vase — vivid against the pale walls. Larsson painted Brita's portrait several times; this one, from around 1910, catches her at a still, interior moment.

The house at Sundborn, in the Dalarna region of Sweden, was both home and subject for Larsson across three decades. He and his wife Karin transformed Lilla Hyttnäs into a living expression of the Arts and Crafts ideal — decorated rooms, handmade textiles, a garden used through every season — and their seven children moved through it as both inhabitants and recurring figures in his art.
