Cypress and Chapel in Italy — Hans Andersen Brendekilde Postcard

Dark cypress trees rise in a tight cluster against an overcast sky, with an ochre chapel and its bell tower emerging behind them, terracotta roofs and a low stone wall completing the scene. Brendekilde painted this during one of his trips south from Denmark, and the light and architecture read differently from his usual Funen views — more contemplative, closer to a quiet corner of Italy than a village street.
