Boulevard des Capucines (1873–74) — Claude Monet Postcard

From a balcony above the Boulevard des Capucines Monet looks down on a winter Paris afternoon: black silhouettes of pedestrians, carriages, bare plane trees, and a smudged crowd dissolving into the painted air — the loose, top-down view of a city that critics did not yet know how to read. Painted in 1873–74, it was one of the canvases shown at the very first Impressionist exhibition in Nadar's studio on the same boulevard in April 1874, the show that gave the movement its name.
