Bordighera, 1884 — Claude Monet Postcard

Monet painted Bordighera in 1884 during a winter campaign on the Italian Riviera; the canvas now hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago. Twisted Mediterranean pines curve across the foreground, framing a sun-bleached town and the blue sea far below. The palette — pink stone, silvery olive green, deep cobalt — struck Monet as so intense he warned a friend it might shock Paris on his return.
