The ivory dress fills the foreground like a column of still air — voluminous skirt, pale blue trim at the bodice, hands folded in composed repose. Behind her, Alfred Stevens arranged a Japanese folding screen and a black lacquered chinoiserie cabinet against a blue wall: the precise props of a fashionable Parisian interior in 1867, when japonisme was still new and the objects carried a genuine curiosity value.

Stevens painted women inside these carefully assembled spaces throughout the 1860s and 1870s. These objects — the lacquered cabinet, the folding screen — document a specific cultural moment: the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle had brought Japanese art to European attention on an unprecedented scale, and Stevens was among the first painters to understand what that shift in taste meant for the interior. The mood here is unusually still. Part of the Alfred Stevens collection by Zolota Ptakha, 10×15 cm on 350 g/m².
