An elegant woman reclines on a veranda, absorbed in a book, while a plump winged cupid hovers at the balustrade — holding out a note amid white roses as though uncertain whether to interrupt. The light is luminous, the mood gently playful, and the composition signed and dated 1883, placing it squarely in Stevens's late period when he returned repeatedly to allegorical figures set in domestic outdoor spaces.

Stevens painted several versions of this theme: the letter-bearer as winged messenger rather than postman, the mundane made mythological. The work belongs to a small group of late allegorical compositions — rare moments when the classical intrudes gently on the otherwise resolutely modern world of his Belle Époque interiors and gardens.
