Rough Sea with Steamship, Aivazovsky — Art Postcard

A steamship trails smoke through choppy water while a two-masted schooner runs close by under a darkening sky — old sail and new steam sharing the same rough Black Sea crossing. A walled coastal fortress rises on the cliffs to the right, and whitecaps break in the foreground where a mooring buoy rides the swell.

Aivazovsky returned to this contrast often; framed on its own, the card holds its own as a small marine print among his stormier seascapes.
