Rough Sea with Steamship, Aivazovsky — Art Postcard

Steam and sail share the same rough water, with a fortified coastline rising on the right and a heavy sky overhead. Aivazovsky returned often to this tension — the new steamships moving through waters that had belonged, for centuries, to canvas and rope — and the picture has all his usual command of weather and weight.

At postcard scale it works as a small marine print: framed, posted, or kept among other cards from his sea years.
