Sunset over the Bay of Naples, Aivazovsky — Art Postcard

The bay glows like beaten gold. A volcanic mountain — Vesuvius in all but name — closes the horizon, a sailboat catches the last light, and a small rowboat pulls a handful of passengers toward the shore. Aivazovsky's Mediterranean work was a favourite of European collectors, and this is exactly the warm, southern register that made it travel.
