Pomegranates on a Windowsill, Behind Venice (Granatäpfel auf einer Fensterbank, dahinter Venedig) by Austrian painter Marie Egner combines a fruit still life with a distant view of the Venetian lagoon. Ripe pomegranates rest on a softly draped cloth along a windowsill, their warm red, golden and muted green tones contrasting with the pale blue water and hazy skyline of Venice beyond the open window.
The composition brings together two familiar artistic traditions: the intimate observation of fruit in a still life and the expansive view offered through a window. The pomegranates, branches and folded textile occupy the foreground, while the distant Venetian landscape dissolves into delicate washes of pale blue and grey. This contrast between tangible objects and an atmospheric cityscape gives the watercolor a distinctive sense of depth.
This fine art postcard brings together pomegranates, Venetian scenery and historic European watercolor in a format made for postcrossing, snail mail and postcard collecting.
